Congratulations you got an Iris Carrier Board. Here are the steps to get it running.

Note: You may also want to have a look at the Quickstart Guide provided by Toradex.

Warning: If you have an Iris Carrier Board V2.0, make sure to read Migrate from Iris V1.1 to V2.0.

Connect Colibri Module

Insert any Colibri Module to the SODIMM/X1 connector on the top side of Iris board. For example following image shows Colibri T20 is inserted.

Connect USB Mouse/Keyboard

Connect a mouse/keyboard to the USB host port (X11). You can use an USB HUB to connect more number of USB devices. USB interface on Iris is able to support USB 2.0 high speed and operating at a maximum 480Mbit/s, depending upon the Colibri Module being used.

Connect a Display

There are many options available for connecting LCD panels or monitor, with the following supported interfaces:

  • EDT Display (18 bit digital RGB/X3)
  • VGA Display Monitor
  • DVI-I(X4) (Digital TDMS and Analog VGA) or HDMI Display
  • Remote Display

For more details on display, interfaces check Iris datasheet.

Choose a display based on the available interface and follow the instructions given below. In case you do not have any display available you can refer Connect USB client / Remote Display section.

Connect EDT Display

Please check this article for EDT display installation procedure.

Connect VGA Display

If you have connected a display skip this section.
Use a DVI to VGA converter to connect a display with VGA interface to DVI-I/X4 connector on Iris board.

The following image shows a display interfaced with Iris using a DVI to VGA converter and VGA cable.

Connect HDMI/DVI Display

If you have connected a display skip this section.
Only Colibri T20, T30, and iMX6 provides HDMI/DVI signals. To interface, an HDMI/DVI display follow the procedure given below.

Connect 24-pin FFC cable that comes with the Iris board to HDMI/X2 connector on the bottom side of the Colibri Module. This HDMI/X2 connector is not compatible with the Colibri PXA and Vybrid family, check module datasheet for more details.

Now connect the other end of the FFC cable to X2 connector on the bottom side of the Iris board.

NOTE: Make sure you have connected the FFC cable correctly i.e. pin 1 on Iris/X2 is connected to pin 1 of FFC connector on Colibri/X2 and so on.

Use a DVI-I (male) to HDMI Converter to connect HDMI interface display to Iris board as shown below. To connect a DVI monitor you can directly connect with the DVI cable.

For HDMI output you may also use Colibri HDMI Adapter.

Connect USB Client (Remote Display)

If you have connected a display skip this section.
If you do not have any display available, connect a Micro-USB cable from your development PC to USB client port (USB-OTG/X12) on Iris to use the Remote Display Tool.

Following image shows the Micro-USB cable connected to the Iris board.

NOTE: If you use Windows XP or an earlier version you need to install ActiveSync. Windows 7/8 will automatically use Windows Mobile Device Center when you connect your Toradex Module with the development PC )

You can use Remote display over Ethernet also. See articles Use Remote Display via Ethernet and Application Debugging Over Ethernet Using Visual Studio 2008.

Connect Power

X17 power connector on Iris board is a polarity sensitive connector. Connect an external power supply 6-27V (12V @2A recommended) to the board using a terminal connector as shown below. Two green LEDs i.e. LED1 and LED2 on the top of the Iris will glow indicating the presence of the 3.3V and 5V voltages.

NOTE: Before power-on make sure you have done the right connections for power supply otherwise board might get damaged. For more information check Iris datasheet.

The system will start as soon as the power supply is connected and you will be able to see the desktop window of pre-installed operating system (WinCE or Embedded Linux) on the connected display.
